Welcome to Polydora’s Pickles

Polydora means "Many Blessings" in Classical Greek.

We want our pickles to bless many plates and many palettes.

You can purchase our pickles using our PayPal Shopping Cart on the Prodcts page of this website.

If you are organising an event and would like us to bring a stall please contact us.  We will see if we are available on that date.

We are initially concentrating on three original pickles and the classic Brown Sauce.

Henry Ford famously said, "you can have any colour as long as it is black".  We did not want to produce a range of pickles that all looked brown.  With our pickles you can see what you are getting.

Warning:  Our pickles are not fattening but the cheese and biscuits are that you have with them .

New to our range

We have recently added the classic favourite Tomato Sauce to our range.  This can be purchased from our retail outlets or by going to the Products page of this website.

How did it all begin?

The reason why we diversified into pickles is because of the very bad weather in the Spring and Summer of 2007. This out of sync weather had a major impact on our honey production and  we could not rely on it alone.  Honey is a seasonal product so we needed to find something that could be produced all year round.

We still wanted to keep the natural theme in food on our Rotherham Farmers Market Stall which is held on the last Wednesday of the month.  Vinegar, fruit and vegatables are other natural products.  Polydora's Pickles were born from this idea.

We were already registered as a food producer with Rotherham Council and have been on a Safer Food Better Business Course to ensure consistent production procedures in our kitchen.

Is it a Pickle or a Chutney?

Pickling is an ancient method of preserving fruits and vegetables in season and has been used in Britain since Roman times.
Fruit and vegetables used for pickling must be fresh and free from blemishes.

Chutneys originated in India and the name comes from the word "Chatni", meaning a strong, sweet relish.  They first appeared in Britain in the seventeenth century. Chutneys are usually cooked very slowly for a long time to give a rich, mellow flavour and a dark colour.

Chutney will taste better if left to mature for at least three months, and will keep in a cool, dry, dark place for 2-3 years.  Pickles will keep similarly for a year. However, we are following a cautious approach and recommended using our pickles up 6 months after being made, if they last that long.
